School Funding Challenges
I wanted to make sure everyone had a quick summary of the Mount Arlington school funding challenges ahead of our meeting tonight. I think it’ll be helpful context as we discuss ways to take action.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to share more details on what I know so far. Looking forward to seeing you all tonight!

Overview
Rising Costs & Budget Deficits
Skyrocketing insurance costs, persistent inflation, growing special education needs, and increasing tuition at Roxbury High School have pushed Mt. Arlington schools into a deficit. These challenges—beyond the schools’ control—are already leading to real consequences.
Impact on Programs & Staff
Extracurricular activities such as band, choir, art, and sports have been eliminated, teachers and staff are losing their jobs, and resources are dwindling while student numbers grow.
The Role of a Referendum
A referendum has been mentioned that would ask taxpayers to exceed the 2% contribution cap. However, before we request additional funds from residents, the borough must demonstrate that it is doing everything possible to support our schools.
A Call to Reassess the 2025 Budget
We urge the borough to reevaluate the 2025 budget—prior to the council meeting on May 6th—and prioritize education funding to help bridge the current gap. Even small adjustments could save a teacher’s job or a vital program for the upcoming school year.
Community Involvement
It’s crucial for everyone to show up on May 6th and make it clear that strong schools build strong communities. A well-supported education system benefits not just our children and families but the entire Mount Arlington community by driving property values, attracting new residents, and enhancing our overall quality of life.
This is a collective call to action—let’s work together to strengthen our schools and create a solid foundation for our entire community.
Onwards and Upwards,
Jess Price & the MtADems
